Interior Design Project : Working with an Open Plan

When Holly met this couple, they were renovating their whole house and wanted to give the first floor an open plan makeover. This was to be tweaked so as to add a smaller snug room at the front of the house, and designing a large open plan kitchen, living and dining space to fill up the back of the house and lead out onto the balcony.

Excited at the idea, Holly immediately got to work.

Transforming the space

Holly's suggestions included adding finishes touches using furniture from Roomes. Following her advice, a bespoke corner sofa, a dining set and lighting were brought into the open plan space to add some Roomes magic to the scene - bringing character and warmth to what was already a vibrant space visualised by Holly and the clients.

"The result was a bright and open area that was perfect for family life," explains Holly.

Entering the entertainment zone

In line with the playful theme of the design, a secret door was built on the open plan floor, which led down to a space dedicated to entertaining and hosting parties.

This consisted of a game room with its very own bar and wine cellar, perfect for use by the hosts with the most.

The ceiling was painted in a shade called 'Black Cab'  by Graham & Brown. As an artsy yet sophisticated touch, the borders of this colour were dropped slightly onto the ceiling, a task which the decorator impressively completed freehand.

The fuschia coloured tailor-made snooker table became the striking focal point of this black and white room which was now completely ready to be filled up with friends and family.

Snug as a bug

Having thoroughly enjoyed watching the transformation of their house so far, the clients called Holly back to tackle the final remaining part of the first floor - the snug room.

Having ticked a modern and spirited space for entertaining off their list, the clients now wanted something more relaxed for the snug room. Complete with a mid-century style sofa and chair by Orla Kiely and some mellow lighting, the cosy snug room fit in perfectly as the final piece.

"The clients wanted to have fun with the overall design," explains Holly, "I enjoyed helping them create a home that was perfect for enjoying a sociable family life!"
